Know and Understand Your Wedding Budget

Set a Realistic Wedding Budget

One of the first things I realized was that having a clear, realistic budget is everything. It’s tempting to start booking vendors. Or buying decor the minute you get engaged. But taking the time to figure out how much you can actually spend will save you so much stress. Which by the way I learned the hard way.

Bridal Tip: Allocate around 50% of your budget to the venue, catering, and rentals. The rest can go to things like photography, attire, and decor.

Common Budget Mistakes to Avoid

Trust me, I made a few of these myself!

Hidden Costs: Service fees, taxes, and tips can catch you off guard. Make sure to ask about these upfront. Don’t be deceived by advertised low rates. Wedding suppliers often show this and not mention its “net” price.

Last-Minute Purchases: It’s amazing how fast these add up. Plan for things like beauty treatments and attire alterations ahead of time. Unnecessary transportation and accommodations.

Where to Splurge: High-Impact Investments

1. Photography and Videography

I can’t stress this enough, spend money here if you can. Your wedding day goes by in a flash, but your photos and videos will last forever. I still flip through my album when I need a little pick-me-up!

Bridal Tip: If a full-length wedding film isn’t in your budget, ask for an edited highlight video instead.

2. Food and Drinks

One of the things guests remember most is the food. Quality catering and an open bar (or at least a signature cocktail) are usually worth the splurge.

Budget-Friendly Idea: Offer a limited bar with beer, wine, and a signature cocktail. You can do DIY signages to make this more personal and according to your wedding theme. You can check out some wedding signages here.

3. Entertainment

A great band or DJ can make or break your reception vibe. We saved here by booking a local band we loved instead of a big-name act, and it was one of the best decisions we made.

Bridal Savings Tip: Look for up-and-coming local talent for a lively experience without the hefty price tag.

Where to Save: Smart Cost-Cutting Tips

1. Invitations and Stationery

Printed invitations are beautiful but can be pricey. We went with digital invitations and used a mix of DIY printables for things like menus and programs, which saved us hundreds.

Try This: Check out some wedding printables here.

2. Venue Decor

If your venue is naturally gorgeous, you won’t need to spend a fortune on decorations. We chose a venue with beautiful gardens, so we could save on florals and decor.

DIY Tip: Move your ceremony flowers to the reception space to get more bang for your buck.

3. Wedding Dress and Attire

I get it saying yes to the dress is a big moment. But if the price tag makes you sweat, don’t overlook sample sales, rentals, or pre-loved gowns.

Alternative: Renting a dress can save you a ton without sacrificing style. Or try to find an affordable dress online for bridesmaid.

Bridal Tips for Stretching Your Budget

1. Negotiate with your Wedding Vendors

Don’t be shy about negotiating! Most wedding vendors are willing to work with you if you’re polite and reasonable.

How to Ask:

“Your work is amazing, but it’s a bit out of our budget. Is there any flexibility on pricing or package options? Or is there any payment scheme?”

2. Choosing Off-Peak Dates

We got married on a Sunday and saved a bundle. Venues often offer discounts for weekday or off-season weddings, so consider your options.

Savings Tip: You could save up to 20% just by picking a different day!

3. DIY vs. Professional Services

Some things are worth DIY-ing, and some aren’t. I learned this the hard way when I tried to DIY my own cake toppers—let’s just say I ended up buying them anyway.

DIY: Invitations, centerpieces, and favors.
